Where did all the paper go? If there are such things as existential questions for the printing industry, this surely is one of them.
Printers aren’t agonizing over it now, and realistically, probably never will. But, the current tightness of the market for the kinds of paper that commercial and in-plant printing firms rely on reminds printers to take nothing for granted where the availability of their substrates is concerned.

Shutting down print doesn’t drive those readers to print-like consumption habits on digital devices. Instead, they become a lot like other digital readers — easily distracted, flitting from link to link, and a little allergic to depth.

Printing Impressions: Magazine-quality paper is in such short supply that some publishers, unable to obtain their usual stock, are having to fall back on whatever they can get their hands on to print their issues. There are no signs that the scarce supply and rising prices afflicting all U.S. buyers of publication papers will abate in 2019.

News & Tech: The U.S. Department of Commerce Thursday reaffirmed, but reduced, tariffs on uncoated groundwood paper from Canada, which includes newsprint used by newspapers and other segments of the printing and publishing industries.
Commerce revised the duties, setting them at 8.4 percent to 20.26 percent instead of 4.4 percent to 32 percent.
